  1. Flash cards – these are very helpful for beginners as they can see the picture and learn to read the words. You can make flash cards with English translation on one side and the Chinese words on the other. These flash cards can be kept with you always so when you find a little spare time you can keep looking at them and mastering the words and the pronunciation as well. You also can make for yourself some small size charts with different phrases and new words that you can pin up in front of you and read it each time you set your eyes on it.
  2. Keep small labels on items around you in the house or work place – this may seem to be a very silly idea to place labels on items already known to you. But look at it on the other hand; the labels are not in the language that you are familiar with. You will have to read the labels many times over to remember the word and the meaning. This is typical kindergarten style but it really works for beginners learning Mandarin Chinese. Do this for a month or two and you will notice the difference.
  3. Frame sentences – try framing your own sentences with the new words that you have learn. Maybe you can add a few English words to it in the beginning till you are familiar with the Chines vocabulary. Don’t care much about the grammar in the beginning because the grammar varies from Chinese to English. Just keep writing sentences in a note book and read them frequently.
  4. Listening to audio tapes – this is mandatory for you to know the exact pronunciation of each word. You can buy a few learning tapes and at the same time you can listen to some Chinese programs, news readings, especially those spoken in the Mandarin Chinese. You should do this more often if you want to master the language quicker and let it remain in your mind for long.
